Review Film Performance Comparison - VLT over 10% up to 20%
All the Leading USA Made Window Film Brands
Nine of the ten films are made in the USA (Hanita is made in Israel). All are WERS Energy Rated and have similar performance - allowing 14% to 18% Visible Light to pass through the films, block 99% UV and block between 52% and 72% of the heat. The main difference is the Johnson Films DN15, Smart Films HP15 and the Hanita Natura 15 are neutral shaded films designed to preserve a natural view out of a window and are constructed using the latest sputter coating or electron beam coating technologies. The others are dual reflective films designed primarily to reduce internal reflection, particularly at night.
WHAT TO BUY?
Best for heat - Dual reflective films: SunTek DS15 which blocks 75% of the heat and has a external VLR of 36%.
Best for heat -Neutral films:Smart Films HP15 blocks 70% of the heat and a VLR of 24%
Good heat reduction and low reflection - Neutral films:The Hanita Natura 15 is the least reflective (9%) and blocks 62% of the heat

WERS – Window Energy Rating Scheme – Film performance data has been independently tested and verified as true (no point in comparing performance if the data for a film has not been confirmed to be true)
VLT – Visible Light Transmitted (less than 20% VLT will make a room “feel” darker)
VLR - Visible Light Reflectance (a measure of how “shiny” or “mirrored” the window appears – clear glass has a VLR of about 8%. As VLR increased above 8% the window appears more reflective
TSER – Total Solar Energy Rejected (indicates the films heat rejecting ability – more is better to reduce heat)
SHGC – Sikar Heat Gain Coefficient (a value ranging from 1.00 to 0.00 showing the solar heat that is transmitted through the glass – lower is better)
UV – Ultra Violet light (the major cause of sun damage and fading – more blocked is better to reduce fading)
U value - a measure of how effective a material is as an insulator. The lower the U-value, the better.
(a) MEP state on their website that the performance date provided is derived from film applied to 6mm clear glass and not 3mm clear glass that is normally used for film performance testing (WERS ratings use 3mm glass) – film installed on 6mm clear glass will provide a higher % heat blocked than the same film installed on 3mm clear glass). 6mm clear glass is frequently used in commercial buildings.
